Who is the instructor?
When you are looking for a BJJ gym to train, the first thing you need to find out is the legitimacy of the instructor.
BJJ is not very new in Indonesia but it is still a growing martial arts. It has become more and more popular in recent years due to the rise of the MMA industry in the country and this also comes with a consequence that there are many fake black belts take this opportunity to open "BJJ gyms".
At DW Jiu Jitsu, the head instructor is definitely legitimate because he received his black belt from one of the best practitioners in the BJJ scene.
The head instructor at the academy is Prof. Deddy Wigraha, hence the branding DW in DW Jiu Jitsu.
Deddy's BJJ training started in 1996 under Rickson Gracie and Charles Gracie. In 2013, he received his black belt from Romero 'Jacare' Cavalcanti, the founder of Alliance Jiu Jitsu, a times world champion BJJ team.
Deddy is also the head coach of the Indonesian Jiu Jitsu national team, as well as the owner and head coach of Alliance Jiu Jitsu Indonesia and Jackson's MMA.
In addition, Deddy also works with the counter terrorism group of the Kopassus (Indonesia’s Army Special Forces). He has been working with them for many years teaching them self-defense techniques to help protect themselves.

Is it self defense or sports BJJ?
Self defense BJJ is for when you need to protect yourself from someone who is trying to hurt you. Sports BJJ is when you compete in tournaments against other people.
There are many different techniques that you can learn in both self defense and sports BJJ.
Some of the most common techniques are takedowns, submissions, and sweeps.
Takedowns are when you take your opponent to the ground. Submissions are when you force your opponent to tap out or submit. Sweeps are when you sweep your opponent's legs out from under them.
Takedowns and submissions are the main focus of the self defense aspect in BJJ, while sweeps are more common in competitions because in order to sweep someone, you have to pull guard (sitting on the ground), something that is not advisable during a street fight scenario.
The heart of BJJ is self defense and since Deddy is an Alliance Jiu Jitsu black belt, he teaches self defense heavily during the fundamental/beginner classes.
During fundamental classes, we usually drill takedowns first before going into the ground technique or submissions. The ground technique also heavily focuses on basic moves that work in a street fight situations.
Several classes in a week are dedicated for sports BJJ for intermediate and advanced level students who are interested in competing in BJJ tournaments.
The techniques in sports BJJ are more complicated and technical because they are meant to be used against people who have also practiced the martial arts.
In shorts, the DW Jiu Jitsu classes offer both self defense and sports BJJ classes.
